«Shattered Glass» tells about young journalist Stephen Glass works at The New Republic. It`s the most popular and influential political weekly magazine.
Once Chairman of the American Conservative Union David Keene asks clarification about Glass's last article, which would prove that he was there. Reporter says that he made one mistake with a description of minibars in the article, but a story about the drunken antics of Young Republicans at a convention is true. His editor Michael Kelly backs him.
Kelly got fired and writer Charles "Chuck" Lane is promoted as a replacement. Glass writes the article about a young hacker who hacked computer of software company Jukt Micronics and go job there. The magazine published this article, Adam Penenberg, Forbes Digital Tool reporter, tries to find any evidence of this happened but can`t find any.
Stephen can`t provide sources for his article and Lane starts to suspect him of lying. The editor starts to check every piece of information that Glass wrote. Everything turns out to be a fake. Lane suspends Glass, his journalists' team becomes his enemies, but it doesn`t stop his investigation. He checks all the Glass`s article and realize that most of them were fictitious.
