The film movie «The Shape of Water» takes place during the Cold War in 1962. In the secret laboratory works dumb cleaning lady Elisa (Sally Hawkins) with a very boring and measured life. She has friends: neighbor Giles (Richard Jenkins) and cleaning lady Zelda (Octavia Spencer), which helps her friend explain at work.
An amphibian man (Doug Jones) is brought to the laboratory to study. He was caught in the Amazon, where the local worshiped him as a god. He does not want to come into contact with scientists, he is brutally beaten. He tears off two fingers to the head of the security service Richard Strickland (Michael Shannon).
Over time, when Elisa was cleaning up in the laboratory, Elisa makes contact with the amphibian. She teaches him the language of the deaf and dumb. Scientist Robert Hoffstetler (Michael Stulbarg) notices this, but hides it from others, because he is a Soviet agent Mosenkov in fact.
The scientists decided to conduct a scientific autopsy of the amphibian. Upon learning about this Elisa decides to save the creature and convinces to help her Giles and Zelda. They manage to do this and Elisa hides the amphibian in her bathroom. They got feeling for each other. They are waiting for the discharge of water from the canal, so that the amphibian could swim into the ocean, but Strickland, after killing Mosenkov and finding out about the whereabouts of the fugitives, finds them.
He finds information about their plan and comes there. Strickland shoots Elisa and amphibian, despite attempts by Elisa's friends to prevent him. Amphibian wakes up, defeats Strickland and heals his beloved. In place of the scars on the neck, she got gills and she finds a new life under water with her beloved.
